May 19, 2012 Gospel ~ The Coming Day

John 16:23b-28

23 When that day comes, you will not ask me for anything. I am telling you the truth: the Father will give you whatever you ask of him in my name.[a]24Until now you have not asked for anything in my name; ask and you will receive, so that your happiness may be complete.

Victory over the World

25 I have used figures of speech to tell you these things. But the time will come when I will not use figures of speech, but will speak to you plainly about the Father.26 When that day comes, you will ask him in my name; and I do not say that I will ask him on your behalf,27 for the Father himself loves you. He loves you because you love me and have believed that I came from God.28 I did come from the Father, and I came into the world; and now I am leaving the world and going to the Father.

May 18, 2012 Gospel ~ The Disciples’ Joy

John 16:20-23

20 I am telling you the truth: you will cry and weep, but the world will be glad; you will be sad, but your sadness will turn into gladness.21 When a woman is about to give birth, she is sad because her hour of suffering has come; but when the baby is born, she forgets her suffering, because she is happy that a baby has been born into the world.22That is how it is with you: now you are sad, but I will see you again, and your hearts will be filled with gladness, the kind of gladness that no one can take away from you.

23 When that day comes, you will not ask me for anything. I am telling you the truth: the Father will give you whatever you ask of him in my name.[a]

May 17, 2012 Gospel ~ Grief Turning into Joy

John 16:16-20

16
In a little while you will not see me any more, and then a little while later you will see me.

17 Some of his disciples asked among themselves, What does this mean? He tells us that in a little while we will not see him, and then a little while later we will see him; and he also says,
It is because I am going to the Father.18 What does this
a little while mean? We don’t know what he is talking about!

19 Jesus knew that they wanted to question him, so he said to them,
I said,
In a little while you will not see me, and then a little while later you will see me. Is this what you are asking about among yourselves?20 I am telling you the truth: you will cry and weep, but the world will be glad; you will be sad, but your sadness will turn into gladness.

May 16, 2012 Gospel ~ The Spirit of Truth

John 16:12-15

12 I have much more to tell you, but now it would be too much for you to bear.13 When, however, the Spirit comes, who reveals the truth about God, he will lead you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own authority, but he will speak of what he hears and will tell you of things to come.14 He will give me glory, because he will take what I say and tell it to you.15 All that my Father has is mine; that is why I said that the Spirit will take what I give him and tell it to you.

May 15, 2012 Gospel ~ Coming of the Advocate

John 16:5-11

5 But now I am going to him who sent me, yet none of you asks me where I am going.6 And now that I have told you, your hearts are full of sadness.7 But I am telling you the truth: it is better for you that I go away, because if I do not go, the Helper will not come to you. But if I do go away, then I will send him to you.8 And when he comes, he will prove to the people of the world that they are wrong about sin and about what is right and about God’s judgment.9 They are wrong about sin, because they do not believe in me;10 they are wrong about what is right, because I am going to the Father and you will not see me any more;11 and they are wrong about judgment, because the ruler of this world has already been judged.

May 14, 2012 Gospel ~ The Vine and the Branches

John 15:9-17

9 I love you just as the Father loves me; remain in my love.10If you obey my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have obeyed my Father’s commands and remain in his love.

11 I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete.12 My commandment is this: love one another, just as I love you.13 The greatest love you can have for your friends is to give your life for them.14 And you are my friends if you do what I command you.15 I do not call you servants any longer, because servants do not know what their master is doing. Instead, I call you friends, because I have told you everything I heard from my Father.16 You did not choose me; I chose you and appointed you to go and bear much fruit, the kind of fruit that endures. And so the Father will give you whatever you ask of him in my name.17 This, then, is what I command you: love one another.

Sixth Sunday of Easter (Readings and Gospel)

First Reading: Acts 10:25-26, 34-35, 44-48

25 As Peter was about to go in, Cornelius met him, fell at his feet, and bowed down before him.26 But Peter made him rise.
Stand up, he said,
I myself am only a man.

34 Peter began to speak:
I now realize that it is true that God treats everyone on the same basis.35 Those who fear him and do what is right are acceptable to him, no matter what race they belong to.

44 While Peter was still speaking, the Holy Spirit came down on all those who were listening to his message.45 The Jewish believers who had come from Joppa with Peter were amazed that God had poured out his gift of the Holy Spirit on the Gentiles also.46 For they heard them speaking in strange tongues and praising God’s greatness. Peter spoke up:47
These people have received the Holy Spirit, just as we also did. Can anyone, then, stop them from being baptized with water?48 So he ordered them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they asked him to stay with them for a few days.

Second Reading: 1 John 4:7-10

God Is Love

7 Dear friends, let us love one another, because love comes from God. Whoever loves is a child of God and knows God.8 Whoever does not love does not know God, for God is love.9 And God showed his love for us by sending his only Son into the world, so that we might have life through him.10 This is what love is: it is not that we have loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the means by which our sins are forgiven.

Gospel: John 15:9-17

9 I love you just as the Father loves me; remain in my love.10If you obey my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have obeyed my Father’s commands and remain in his love.

11 I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete.12 My commandment is this: love one another, just as I love you.13 The greatest love you can have for your friends is to give your life for them.14 And you are my friends if you do what I command you.15 I do not call you servants any longer, because servants do not know what their master is doing. May 12, 2012 Gospel ~ The World’s Hatred

John 15:18-21

18 If the world hates you, just remember that it has hated me first.19 If you belonged to the world, then the world would love you as its own. But I chose you from this world, and you do not belong to it; that is why the world hates you.20 Remember what I told you:
Slaves are not greater than their master. If people persecuted me, they will persecute you too; if they obeyed my teaching, they will obey yours too.21 But they will do all this to you because you are mine; for they do not know the one who sent me.
